The castle has never been captured by a foreign power. In the Second World War, when the Norwegian government left the city, it was used by the German forces to execute some people.

Akerhus Fortress is still a military site but is open to public visits. The Norwegian Armed Forces Museum and The Norwegian Resistance Museum, Norwegian Armed and Military Museums can be visited in the castle. The Norwegian Ministry of Military Defense is also located in a part of the castle.

Most of the Norwegian royals are buried in the castle mausoleum.
