The palace, which is state property, is managed by an enterprise affiliated to the ministry of state. The entrance fee to the palace, which is open to visitors except for the state service, is 11 Euros.
The palace was built in the 18th century at the request of King Felipe V, on the site of the Alcázar, which used to be a Moorish castle and was destroyed by fire, as a sign of the Spanish Rule.The building was designed by Filippo Juvarra and Giovanni Battista Sacchetti, two of the leading Italian architects of the time, and has been arranged according to needs over the years.
With an area of 135,000 m², the palace has the distinction of being the largest royal palace in Europe in this respect and has 3,418 rooms.
