The Little Mermaid Statue, whose Danish name is Den lille havfrue, is a gift to Copenhagen by Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen. The story of the statue is based on the fact that Carl Jacobsen, son of the founder of Carlsberg beers, watched the ballet performance of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, directed by Hans Beck and Fini Henrique, in 1909.

The statue, whose construction was completed in August 1913, was placed on the shore of the Langelinie cruise port, which is the greenest part of the city. August 23, 1913, when the statue was opened to the public, is considered the birthday of the Little Mermaid Statue.

The statue, which is the most well-known symbolic structure in the world, not only of Copenhagen, but also of Denmark, is also known as one of the most photographed sculptures in the world.

Made of bronze and granite, the sculpture reflects Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Little Mermaid. In the fairy tale, the Little Mermaid swims from the bottom of the sea to the surface every morning and evening, perched on the rock in the water, looking longingly to the shore, hoping to meet her beloved prince.
