The museum, housed in an airy, contemporary building designed by Catalan architect Rafael Moneo in 1998, boasts a world-class collection of international and Swedish modern art, as well as photographs and films from 1900 to the present. Built partially underground, the complex has around 140,000 works of art on display on several levels. The photography library is the most comprehensive collection of its kind in Northern Europe, and there is also a collection of video art and art documentaries.
