Knidos is the most important trade, art and culture city of ancient times. Knidos, the modern city of its age, where the first examples of democracy were experienced, is located at a location where the Aegean Sea and the Mediterranean meet.
The city consists of two parts, the mainland and the island part called "Kap Krio". Knidos has the appearance of a "double city", as Strabo has stated, and is terraced due to the mountainous nature of the land. The sea between the island and the land was filled later, thus two separate ports were obtained. Of these, the smaller one in the north was called the North Harbor. This port was used for military purposes. The southern port on the other side is reserved for trade ships. Today, the ruins of the breakwater that covers the harbor mouth and the tower in the northern harbor can be seen.
The city of Knidos was established according to the grid plan of Hippodamos. Therefore, four wide streets parallel to each other in the east-west direction intersect with a steep street in the north-south direction. In accordance with the location of the land, streets and avenues sometimes crossed each other by stairs and sometimes vertically.
On the mainland, there is the acropolis and the fortification walls, and on the east there is the "Demeter Sanctuary" and the "Great Theatre". There are seven churches known in various parts of the city, a villa from the Hellenistic Period and the Odeion in the south. To the north of this part is the "Sacred of Moses".
There is a Corinthian Temple in the northeast of the mainland. On the west, there is the "Round Temple Terrace", and just below is the "Apollo Terrace". There is a propylon and a street in the east-west direction between the terraces. A large sewage system has been identified here, and remains of the Bouleterion can be seen nearby. To the south of the terrace, there are remains of a temple called the "Pink Temple" because of the color of its stones.
